Minimize Scars With Laser Therapy

Scars are areas of thick tissue that have grown over a wound, skin condition, or surgical incision. Scar tissue may look different from the skin around it. It may be shinier or a darker or lighter shade than the surrounding skin.

Although a scar may fade over time, it won’t go away. However, experienced surgeons like Dr. Matthew St. Laurent here at Northwest EndoSurgical can minimize the appearance of scars using laser therapy.

If you have scarring that you’d like to improve, here are some facts about laser therapy.

Icon laser therapy

Dr. St. Laurent uses the Icon Aesthetic System which employs a process known as fractional, nonablative laser technology. The Icon laser is a fast, effective way to minimize scars.

The Icon works by using fractional laser light to break down scar tissue and generate the growth of new skin.

Dr. St. Laurent uses the Icon laser to minimize all kinds of scars, including those from surgery, injury, and acne. Laser treatment works effectively on all skin types and colors, including very light skin and very dark skin. It’s safe for just about anyone in good health.

The Icon Aesthetic System can also reduce lines and wrinkles, spider veins, uneven pigmentation, and stretch marks.

Benefits of laser therapy

Unlike surgery, laser therapy gives fast results with minimal downtime. Dr. St. Laurent performs Icon laser treatments in his office. And because treatment is noninvasive, you’re out of the office and back to your everyday life shortly afterwards.

Preparing for laser therapy

Laser treatments require little preparation from you beforehand, although Dr. Laurent will ask you not get a tan or a sunburn before the treatment. That’s because performing laser treatment on recently tanned or sunburned skin can interfere with good results.

If you smoke, Dr. St. Laurent may ask you to abstain for a period of time before your procedure.

While some medications or health conditions may preclude you from having laser therapy, most people can have the treatment. Dr. St. Laurent has extensive experience and training in using laser therapy to minimize scarring, and lets you know whether laser therapy makes sense for you.

What to expect

Before your procedure, Dr. St. Laurent may numb your skin with a topical numbing agent if he’s treating a large or sensitive area. However, most patients don’t require this.

When Dr. St. Laurent applies laser energy to your skin, you’ll feel a snappy, pinching sensation. He delivers the laser energy in short bursts, moving around from one treatment area to another.

Depending on how much scarring you have, you may require more than one laser therapy treatment session.

Recovering from laser treatment

After your Icon laser therapy treatments, you may notice redness on the treated skin. This is normal and goes away after a few weeks. You may also experience tenderness, swelling, or bruising, although this is rare.

Dr. St. Laurent advises you on what steps you can take, such as using over-the-counter pain medication, to relieve any symptoms you may have.

You also need to avoid sunlight during a period of time after your laser treatment.
