Gastric Bypass

For some people who struggle with obesity, diet and exercise just aren't enough to achieve healthy weight loss.

Gastric bypass surgery is a tried-and-true method of surgically helping patients control their appetites and lose weight.

Why should you choose Dr. Matthew St. Laurent and his team at Northwest EndoSurgical in the Houston, TX, area for your gastric bypass?

Why Patients Choose Us for Gastric Bypass Surgery

Expertise

Dr. St. Laurent is highly regarded in the bariatric community. In addition to his many prestigious awards and memberships, Dr. St. Laurent is an educator of other surgeons. Over the years, he has successfully performed thousands of bariatric surgeries.

Long-Term Care

At our practice in Houston, Texas, we know that your weight loss journey neither begins nor ends with a weight loss surgery. Most bariatric patients require guidance and care both during and after their procedure in order to successfully shed their excess weight and lead healthier lives. That is why we commit to offering our patients long-term support with nutritional and psychological counseling.

Financing

We don't want financial concerns to keep any patient from life-changing bariatric surgery. For any costs not covered by medical insurance, we offer third-party financing through CareCredit®, American Healthcare Lending®, and United Medical Credit®.

Laparoscopic Options

Dr. St. Laurent prefers to operate laparoscopically whenever possible. Laparoscopic procedures involve making a few small incisions and operating inside the body with the aid of a surgical camera. This advanced surgical method reduces scarring, chances of complications, and recovery time.

Is Gastric Bypass Right for You?

Gastric bypass surgery by Northwest EndoSurgical can help you improve your life. It is a procedure that has been performed on hundreds of thousands of patients for nearly 60 years to help control diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and a host of health conditions related to obesity. Dr. St. Laurent can explain the advantages of gastric bypass surgery over other weight loss options at our Houston weight loss clinic.

How Is Gastric Bypass Surgery Performed?

This is an animated demonstration of how a gastric bypass procedure is performed. Through small incisions, Dr. St. Laurent will staple off sections of the stomach to create a reduced stomach pouch. The small intestine is then separated into two sections so that food can pass directly into a point further along in the small intestine.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

Dr. St. Laurent performs a laparoscopic roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. After making small incisions in the abdomen, he reduces the stomach to a portion of its original size and re-routes the intestine so that it bypasses the beginning of its tract. Afterward, patients feel fuller more quickly and experience less hunger between meals.

What Is Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Gastric bypass surgery is one of the most commonly performed weight loss surgeries in the U.S. Also known as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, this procedure divides the stomach into two separate pouches: upper and lower. The small intestine is then modified to connect it to the upper pouch. This procedure is performed in a hospital setting under general anesthesia and is considered a major operation. Techniques and technology have been improving steadily over the last 50 years, and the procedure is one of the safest and most reliable gastric procedures available today.

The procedure is sometimes referred to as "Roux-en-Y" because of the surgeon who pioneered the technique (César Roux) and the alignment of the stomach and intestines after the surgery somewhat resembles a Y.

Surgery Timeline

Consultation

If you think weight loss surgery could be the right solution for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. St. Laurent at our office in Cypress, TX, just outside of Houston. During this consultation, the doctor will complete a thorough analysis of your medical history and conduct some tests to determine whether gastric bypass or some other bariatric surgery is right for you. If you and Dr. St. Laurent mutually agree to move forward with surgery, your gastric procedure will be scheduled.

Prepare for Surgery

As the date of your procedure approaches, carefully follow all of Dr. St. Laurent's instructions. Practice healthy habits, like quitting smoking and limiting your alcohol consumption. Refrain from certain medications, especially ones that make it difficult for your blood to clot, like ibuprofen and aspirin. You'll also need to make arrangements for someone to help you around your home after your bariatric surgery.

Anesthesia

When the day of your weight loss surgery finally arrives, the first step will be to put you under general anesthesia so you are fully asleep during the procedure.

Incisions

Next, Dr. St. Laurent will make several small incisions in your abdomen to access your stomach and small intestine. He will insert a laparoscope and surgical tools through the incisions.

Stomach Division

Using staples, Dr. St. Laurent will divide your stomach into two separate sections, ensuring the upper section where food will go is much smaller than the lower section.

Intestine Connection

After separating your stomach, a portion of your small intestine will be connected directly to the upper pouch to allow food to pass directly through it.

Close Incisions

Once the small intestine is connected to the upper pouch, the gastric bypass is complete. Dr. St. Laurent will remove his tools and stitch the incisions shut. The entire procedure, including connecting your small intestine to the upper pouch, usually takes between one hour and 90 minutes.

Recovery

Generally, an overnight hospital stay is required after gastric bypass surgery. Dr. St. Laurent will monitor your progress and release you when you are able to walk short distances comfortably and eat a reasonable amount of your diet.

Once you are released, you will need to limit your activity for up to two weeks. After that time, you can gradually increase your activity level over the next few weeks. You will also need to modify your diet, gradually adding in solid foods until you are able to tolerate them easily. Most patients return to normal diet and activity levels in around six weeks.

Healthy Weight Loss

After you are fully recovered, it is important to eat a healthy diet and lead a healthy lifestyle in order to achieve the best possible weight loss results. At our practice in Houston, Texas, we continue to support our patients well after their bariatric surgeries with nutritional and psychological counseling. As you continue to work with us, you should experience noticeable weight loss within six months.

This place is awesome and I'm very happy with my choice to go with them.  The doctor was very thorough in explaining everything.  I especially liked that he didn't want to know what my "choice" was and talked about the pros/cons and prices for each one.  He made my wife and I very comfortable for my upcoming surgery!

This was my initial consultation everyone is very professional, helpful, and caring. Dr. St. Laurent and his staff were amazing. He took the time to explain all the procedures and the risks, as well going over my options for the best possible outcome. His whole approach to Obesity is recognizing it is a disease and requires long term treatment and commitment. I found that encouraging. There is no judgement I never felt uncomfortable, exactly the opposite I was able to be honest about myself and why I want to start this journey during any of the consultation. His insurance specialist is a great help providing actual fees and costs covered and not covered.  Five stars!!!

Gastric Bypass Risks

Like any surgical procedure, gastric bypass surgery could cause an infection or excessive bleeding. There's also a chance that the stomach or intestines could be damaged during the procedure. By choosing Dr. St. Laurent in Houston, TX, for your weight loss surgery, you greatly reduce your chances of encountering these issues. Dr. St. Laurent has successfully completed thousands of surgeries, and he uses the safest, most precise technology during every procedure.
