Understanding LAP-BAND® Risks

Every surgery comes with a certain amount of risk; however, LAP-BAND® has potentially fewer risks associated with it than any other form of bariatric surgery. Houston-area patients can benefit from the experience of board certified general surgeon Dr. Matthew St. Laurent, who will perform this procedure as safely as possible.

Is LAP-BAND® Surgery Risky?

When people hear about the revolutionary LAP-BAND® device, they naturally want to know whether or not having it placed is risky. While any procedure has risks, the LAP-BAND® itself has been approved by the FDA and has been placed successfully in thousands of patients since 2000. In fact, LAP-BAND® is considered one of the safest forms of bariatric surgery because it does not require irreversible modifications to the stomach or intestines.

Even though it is safe, there are a few possible risks, including the following:

  • Band slippage
  • Infection
  • Dilation of the esophagus
  • Poor motility of the esophagus
  • Erosion and deflation

Should you experience any of these side effects, a second operation might be needed to adjust or remove your LAP-BAND®. Having regular checkups can help catch problems early on, making them much easier to deal with.

Possible Surgical Complications

Many of the risks associated with a LAP-BAND® operation are the same as for any other surgery. Some of the most common complications of surgery include the following:

  • Allergic reaction to anesthesia
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Drop in blood pressure or heart rate
  • Difficulty breathing

To reduce the odds of developing these side effects, Dr. St. Laurent will review your medical history; including checking for drug interactions among any prescriptions you may be taking. He may advise you to stop taking certain medications just prior to your surgery as a preventative measure.
