What Is Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Men and women alike experience a lower production of vital hormones as they age. This can lead to a number of conditions, including osteoporosis, sleep difficulty, and lack of energy.  We offer hormone replacement therapy to treat patients who are experiencing the effects of hormonal changes. You may be wondering, "What is hormone replacement therapy, and how can it help with weight loss?" At our Houston, TX-area practice, Dr. Matthew St. Laurent takes the time to answer these questions in detail during one-on-one consultations. To schedule your consultation, reach out to our practice today.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

As we age, we produce lower levels of hormones, which can have a significant impact on overall energy levels and libido. Patients throughout the greater Houston area can restore their youthful vigor with the help of hormone replacement therapy at Northwest Endosurgical. The procedure is quick and the benefits are significant.

What Is Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Hormone replacement therapy involves the use of pellet-sized bio-identical hormones to help alleviate the symptoms of menopause in women and andropause in men. Tiny implants containing these pellets are placed underneath the skin, where they consistently release small amounts of either estrogen or testosterone. It is considered a safe and effective method of increasing normal hormone levels without the side effects noticed from synthetic hormones.

Benefits of Hormone Replacement

There are many benefits to hormone replacement therapy, including:

  • Improved mental clarity and focus
  • Enhanced the mood and helps alleviate depression
  • Increased energy levels
  • Strengthened bones
  • Fewer doctor visits
  • Long-lasting results

How Is Hormone Replacement Performed?

You will first be given a local anesthetic to numb the area being treated. Dr. St. Laurent will then make a tiny incision in your skin so the pellets can be placed. Tiny pellets approximately the size of a grain of rice are inserted underneath the skin, which is then bandaged shut. Although they may be placed anywhere in the body, they are most commonly inserted into the lateral buttocks. They are then left in place and will dissolve completely on their own within three to six months, at which time new pellets can be re-inserted. The entire procedure takes only a few minutes.

Preparing for Hormone Replacement

Prior to inserting hormones, Dr. St. Laurent will perform a simple blood test to determine your levels of estrogen or testosterone so the right pellets can be chosen for you. Women may need to have these levels checked a week or so in advance, while men can normally have theirs checked early the same morning as insertion.

Hormone Replacement Recovery

No recovery is needed after hormone replacement. You will be free to resume your normal activities immediately afterward.

How Much Does Hormone Replacement Cost?

The cost will depend on the exact formula Dr. St. Laurent recommends for you. There will also be a subsequent charge for each re-insertion. Check with your insurance to see if you are covered. Otherwise, we accept cash, check and credit card, as well as financing through CareCredit® and American Healthcare Lending®.

Is Hormone Replacement Right for Me?

Hormone replacement could be a good idea if you are a woman who has symptoms of menopause or perimenopause such as the following:

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Forgetfulness
  • Brain fog
  • Bloating
  • Decreased sex drive

It may also be recommended for men suffering from andropause symptoms such as the following:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Night sweats
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Low sex drive

During your consultation, Dr. St. Laurent will learn more about your medical history and your lifestyle to determine if you are a good candidate for hormone replacement therapy.
