Men and women alike experience a lower production of vital hormones as they age. This can lead to a number of conditions, including osteoporosis, sleep difficulty, mood swings, and a lack of energy. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a supplemental treatment that’s used to counteract age-related hormonal shifts. At Northwest EndoSurgical in Cypress, Houston, Texas, board-certified surgeon Dr. Matthew St. Laurent provides advanced HRT services using bioidentical hormone pellets. If you’re in the greater Houston area and you’d like to learn more, call or book your appointment online today.

Bioidentical Hormones Q & A

What is hormone replacement therapy?

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) involves the use of pellet-sized bioidentical hormones to help alleviate the symptoms of menopause in women and andropause in men.

Tiny implants containing these pellets are surgically placed underneath the skin, where they consistently release small amounts of either estrogen or testosterone.

Bioidentical HRT is considered a safe and effective method of increasing normal hormone levels without the side effects noticed from synthetic hormones.

What are the benefits of hormone therapy?

HRT using bioidentical hormones comes with a wide range of potential benefits, including:

  • Improved mental clarity and focus
  • Improved mood and decreased depression
  • Increased energy levels
  • Increased bone protection and strength
  • Decreased risk of long-term health problems
  • Fewer routine doctor visits

How are hormone pellets surgically placed?

After you receive a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area, Dr. St. Laurent will make a small incision in your skin where he can place the tiny pellet, which is approximately the size of a grain of rice. Once it’s inserted, your skin is bandaged shut.

Although HRT pellets may be placed anywhere in the body, they’re most commonly inserted into the lateral buttocks. Left in place, they’ll completely dissolve on their own within three to six months, at which time new pellets can be inserted.

The entire procedure takes just a few minutes.

How should I prepare for hormone therapy?

Prior to inserting bioidentical hormone pellets, Dr. St. Laurent will perform a simple blood test to determine your levels of estrogen or testosterone so he can choose the right pellets for you. Women may need to have these levels checked a week or so in advance, while men can normally have theirs checked early the same morning as insertion.

Will I need to recover after receiving hormone pellets?

No downtime is needed after bioidentical hormone pellet insertion — you’ll be free to resume your normal activities immediately afterward.

How much does hormone therapy cost?

The cost will depend on the exact formula Dr. St. Laurent recommends for you. There will also be an additional charge for each subsequent pellet insertion.

Check with your insurance to see if you are covered; otherwise, Northwest EndoSurgical accepts cash, check, and most major credit cards, as well as financing through CareCredit® and American Healthcare Lending®.

Am I a good candidate for hormone therapy?

HRT could be an ideal solution if you’re a woman who is affected by common menopause symptoms, including:

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Forgetfulness
  • Brain fog
  • Bloating
  • Decreased sex drive

HRT may also be recommended for men suffering from common andropause symptoms, including:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Night sweats
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Low sex drive
