Weight loss surgery can provide a safe, effective option for overweight or obese people who can’t lose enough weight through diet and exercise alone.

If you’re considering weight loss surgery, which is also known as bariatric surgery, you have a range of options. One of them is the gastric balloon procedure, a minimally invasive technique that offers a safe, effective way to control your appetite and lose weight.

Board-certified surgeon Dr. Matthew St. Laurent here at Northwest EndoSurgical has extensive experience treating our patients with the gastric balloon procedure. He was one of the first weight loss surgeons to offer gastric balloons to patients in the Houston area.

Dr. St. Laurent uses two gastric balloon systems in patients who opt for this procedure. One is the Obalon Balloon System, which uses three balloons to help facilitate weight loss. It’s possible that the Obalon system could help you achieve your weight loss goals.

What is a gastric balloon?

A gastric balloon is a balloon-like medical device that is inserted into your stomach. When balloons are expanded with saline solution, they take up space in your stomach, which reduces the amount of food that you can comfortably eat.

Most patients with gastric balloons discover that they have fewer food cravings. And because they feel fuller faster after eating, they tend to eat smaller meals and take in fewer calories. Eating less can lead to significant weight loss.

It’s safe and easy

Dr. St. Laurent inserts the balloons into your stomach through your mouth and your esophagus. This relatively simple procedure has few potential side-effects and a short recuperation time. In fact, because it requires no incisions, it’s known as one of the fastest and least invasive weight loss procedures.

The entire insertion process takes about 30 minutes, or 10 minutes per balloon. After a few hours of routine observation in the hospital, you can go home.

Gastric balloons can stay in place for up to six months. At that point, they must be removed or replaced. Removal is a relatively simple process; balloons are deflated and then removed via your mouth.

Should you have a gastric balloon procedure?

Gastric balloons have received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of between 30 and 40 who have not had luck losing weight through diet and exercise. And in some cases, they can be used in patients who have a BMI over 40 as a way to prepare for future bariatric procedures.

Gastric balloons can help jumpstart weight loss, especially in people who have struggled to lose weight in the past. Research has found that patients who incorporate the Obalon Balloon System with diet and exercise have lost approximately twice as much weight as those who try to slim down through diet and exercise alone.
