Gastric Sleeve Surgery in Houston, TX
One of the most effective bariatric surgeries available is the gastric sleeve, which can be performed on Houston-area patients by the experienced and skillful hands of board certified general surgeon Dr. Matthew St. Laurent.
What Is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery is a procedure designed to reduce the size of the stomach, thereby making you feel full sooner. As a result, you’ll eat less, which will make it easier for you to lose weight. Gastric sleeve surgery is non-reversible since it involves removing part of the actual stomach tissue.
Benefits of Gastric Sleeve Surgery
- Effective at suppressing the appetite
- Reduces the risk of “dumping,” which occurs when food empties into the small intestine too quickly and causes diarrhea
- May help improve health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure
- Requires a shorter hospital stay than many other weight loss procedures
- Improves one’s quality of life
The dramatic results possible after gastric bypass surgery are clearly seen in these before and after photographs of actual patients. Use these only as a guide to possible results as the exact amount of weight loss you experience may be different.
How Is Gastric Sleeve Surgery Performed?
Gastric sleeve surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Dr. St. Laurent will make several small incisions around ¼” to ½” in length in the abdomen. A laparoscope, or tiny camera, may be inserted through any of these small incisions to broadcast images to a nearby computer monitor. These images will guide Dr. St. Laurent in performing the operation.
A sizable section of stomach tissue will be removed, reducing it to less than half its normal size. The remaining stomach tissue will be a thin, vertical “sleeve,” which is then stapled shut. The camera will then be removed, and your incisions will be sewn together.

Preparing for Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Dr. St. Laurent will recommend a dietary program for you, which may include only liquids in the two-week period leading up to your surgery. He may also advise you to stop taking certain medications or forego smoking and alcohol.
Gastric Sleeve Surgery Recovery
Your diet will be restricted for around one month after surgery. In the beginning, you may consume only liquids and will gradually add solid foods back into your diet over time. You may also need to eliminate the amount of food you eat at one time. It’s important to drink plenty of water during the recovery period to avoid dehydration and help eliminate constipation.
How Much Does Gastric Sleeve Surgery Cost?
Costs vary, so the exact price will be discussed with you during your consultation. You will also be given an opportunity to apply for financing if needed.
Is Gastric Sleeve Surgery Right for Me?
You could benefit from gastric sleeve surgery if you are committed to eating small-sized portions of food indefinitely. Even though gastric sleeve surgery reduces the size of your stomach, it can stretch if you continue to overeat, which would render your results ineffective.
